The honest answer is that hail size alone does not tell the whole story. What damages a roof depends on hail size, wind speed at impact, the age and condition of your shingles, and how many stones hit over how wide an area. But size is still the most practical starting point, because it gives you a reasonable first read on whether your roof deserves a professional inspection before the next storm rolls through.

What Each Hail Size Means for Your Roof
Pea Size (0.25 inch) and Marble Size (0.50 inch)
At these smaller sizes, functional shingle damage on a well-maintained roof is unlikely. You may see granules in the gutters, and soft metals like aluminum flashing, gutters, and vent caps can show cosmetic marks. On a roof that is already weathered or approaching the end of its lifespan, even small repeated impacts can accelerate granule loss over time.
If the storm brought nothing larger than pea or marble size and your roof is less than 10 years old and in good condition, a professional inspection is still worth scheduling but is lower urgency than larger sizes.
Quarter Size (1.00 inch)
This is where the conversation changes.
Engineering and field guidance consistently places the functional damage threshold for three-tab asphalt shingles at around one inch. Haag Engineering, whose work is widely referenced in the roofing and insurance industry, identifies quarter-size hail as the size at which circular granule loss from hail impact becomes reliably identifiable and documentable on standard asphalt shingles.
For the OKC market, one inch is commonly treated as a practical inspection threshold in the field. Carriers do not publish a universal hail-size minimum for claims. What they look for is documented functional damage under the terms of your specific policy. But if that damage exists, a one-inch storm is large enough to have caused it on a standard asphalt roof.
Newer architectural shingles are generally tougher than three-tab shingles and may require slightly larger hail before showing functional damage. But on any roof over 10 years old, quarter-size hail warrants a professional look.
Golf Ball Size (1.75 inch)
Golf ball-size hail is well within the range where architectural shingles can bruise, crack, or lose significant granules, particularly when the roof has any weathering or prior storm exposure.
1.75 inches is also the laboratory impact size used for the UL 2218 Class 3 impact-resistance test. What that means practically: a standard architectural shingle is not tested to withstand this size at all, and even Class 3 rated shingles are at their limit. On roofs with standard shingles and any age, golf ball hail produces claim-relevant damage more often than not.

UL 2218 Class 4 is a laboratory test. The shingle passes by surviving the impact of a two-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking through the shingle. That is a controlled, repeatable test, and passing it means the shingle performs meaningfully better than standard options. It does not mean the shingle is hail-proof.
GAF, whose Class 4 lines include the Timberline AS II and the Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat technology, explicitly states that Class 4 shingles are not warranted to withstand hail damage. For context, GAF’s flagship Timberline HDZ, the most widely installed shingle line in the country, carries a Class 3 rating, not Class 4.
